Wide open rocky spaces

Coming to the desert from Darwin made me realize that I feel quite comfortable in the desert. I like the hot dry days and cool nights. I like the openness and the expansiveness and the ruggedness. It is an environment that envelops and dwarfs yet still has the capacity to befriend. And really best of all I like the rocks and mountains – raw untamed earthy stone rising above and beyond the monotony of spinifax and shrubs. Trees are amazing but they do get in the way of the view and act as a protective cover for what lies below. The desert is more honest.

Rivers are more fun when dry
