We spent our last two weeks in Argentina basking in another mountain town. While we could have spent longer in Bariloche quite happily, as we travel I have learned more and more about what spots we all really like and really bring out the best in our family.
San Martin de los Andes, although a little more off the beaten path, and in some ways a microcosm of Bariloche, seemed too good a family fit to miss. This small town was everything we had hoped for - cute, compact, artsy, big sense of community, lovely beach on the lake, and surrounded by mountains with hikes out your door. It was exactly the spot we needed for a couple of peaceful weeks of eating well, doing work/school work, and getting outdoors.
Like El Chalten, the town's history is embedded with themes of border dispute turned ecotourism. The mountains around San Martin feel a little greener and the town a little lusher than Bariloche as it is technically on the other side of the mountain watershed (a reason why Chile claims it should be theirs). For whatever reason, in addition to the German architecture, the town has a penchant for roses and we all enjoyed the added fairytale touch the constant rosy backdrop added to our day.
Two weeks of swimming, hiking, playgrounding, working, and eating fresh pasta and ice cream was the sweetest ending to our Argentina visit. We will all miss Argentina. With mountains and kindness and dulce de leche forever etched into our neural circuity we move on to new discoveries.
