The infamous Velden

 Day 17: Velden to Drobollach

Hours walked: 10:00-4:00

Kilometres walked: 15

Today was a pretty down day, at least for me (Jakob). The weather was hot and beautiful with a bright blue sky, but moods cast their own shadows. We walked through Velden, which was big and bustling, the girls played in a playground. Our walk was pretty short and flat, mainly on forest roads and trails.

Around lunchtime, after a couple km on a scorching riverbank, we stopped in the village square of Graschitz to fill water. Dozens of jovial Austrians were there eating schnitzel and drinking beer - they cheerfully invited us to join in their village festival. So we had beer and sprite and that was very nice.

Tova found our first ripe blueberry today. We also met a ripe cherry tree. And also ran into a pick-your-own-strawberries farm. So the afternoon was pretty tasty all round. We can see the mountains of Slovenia in the distance, much jaggeder and stonier than Austria’s green alps.

When we got to Drobollach, Tamar took the younger kids to the lakefront, where there was a waterslide. Dinner was spatzle and pizza, and tomorrow’s another day.

  1. Sorry you're feeling about down Jakob. I hope the storm passes for you. These things sometimes have their own timeframe so I hope the walking helps.
