Zero the hero

 Day 10: Seeboden (rest day)

Hours walked: -

Quote of the day: “We are laughing because Canada in our language means nobody’s there!” - cackling Austrian family

There’s a special satisfaction that comes with the coldest, rainiest day coinciding perfectly with our zero day. We slept in, made oatmeal, and went on a short date (to the grocery store and, less unromantically, for mohnschnecken).

It really was a cold day. Aurora had been lamenting for the past week that we brought way too many layers and were carrying them for nothing. I’m happy to report that today we wore all our layers! But that didn’t stop us from enjoying ourselves.

Seeboden is a very charming town on a lake. Based on the number of billboards for water sports and camps and resorts, this lake must be a very fun, happening place when it’s not a rainy Sunday in May. Taking a boat trip around the lake with stops in all the towns on its shores was the perfect rainy day activity. We sat at a table with a hot chocolate looking at the rain-spattered view and playing cards. Our boat gradually filled with people until, by the end of our 2.5-hour journey we felt like we were really a part of something.

Zadie and Tova, meanwhile, tried to fit a week’s worth of play into a single rainy afternoon. They played school, made up songs, raced around the very small flat, put on shows, and furtively made crepes for their sisters as a surprise (Zadie’s favourite event is surprising people with crepes.) Tova was in a brilliantly good mood all day: extra sleep, lots of food and no walking out her on a hyper-happy cloud.

We’re staying in a very cute apartment and have been taking advantage of its kitchen to cook up stews, chili, crepes and hot breakfasts. We feel like we ate all day, which we probably did. Tomorrow, thankfully, promises to be warmer and drier, and hopefully the snow we saw on the mountains this afternoon will melt by the time we get there.

(No pictures - they get a rest today too) :)
