And now we have a home. It was all very smooth and very busy but we have signed off of hotel life for now. Aurora started bawling when we left our serviced apartment stating that she would miss the place. We have moved so many times that I was taken aback by her emotional outburst but it was a comfortable place to be and I liked the cheerful people who cleaned our place for us when we weren't looking.
Our new place is cozy in the sort of way that makes you want to sit on the couch, unbutton your shirt and gulp down a cold ale while listening to polka music. It is an old building from the 30's before the early settlers realized they were no longer in Europe. There is wood molding everywhere, deep windowsills that beckon for you to sit on them, a defunct fireplace with a real mantle, a separate room to dine in, and a separate room to study in, old fashioned radiators, a linen closet, molding on the ceilings. And the owner rose to the occasion by furnishing the house with thick solid dark wood rough cut furniture. We weren't sure about the place at first but are feeling pretty good about it now. It feels good to be in our own space. And best of all it is a block from Aurora's school.
The children were excited for days that the shipment from Canada was finally going to come. They conveniently delivered it half an hour after we got the keys. I was really dreading the delivery as we have more than enough stuff. Our new place has no storage and no yard so who knows where all the bike trailers and camping gear will fit? Sophia beamed as they brought in boxes and Tova jumped up and down saying 'shipment!' even though she doesn't know what that means. I panicked a bit when I counted four boxes labelled books. I couldn't remember bringing along that many. Luckily, these movers are so cautious that they individually wrap each book and each box had a smattering of books and a massive pile of newsprint. And although it was a lot of work to unpack that much newsprint I am glad we have the things as all of a sudden we have dishes and blankets and sheets and don't have to spend a small fortune getting those essential household items. Plus being reunited with a cubic metre of our Montreal possessions has instantly boosted the hominess of our new place by filling it with familiar elephants, basketballs, board games and monkey suits. So now we are ready for some winter living.
