Leaves in the wind

Melbourne is an incredible city. After four weeks here we still have not completed our list of places we want to check out. We could easily make ourselves cozy. In fact we are pretty cozy already. But as good as it is somehow the idea of sticking with our original plan of moving to Australia to live together still has more appeal. So we have made ourselves portable and put ourselves at the mercy of work opportunities.

In two days our accommodation runs out. We once again have nothing planned for after as we wait to go with the work flow. But looks like we will be going to Canberra this weekend. The plus side of all of the turbulence and constant changes in plans is that I have become familiar with a number of Australian cities. I now have a good grasp of the elementary schools and housing markets in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. Really if we continue at this rate of indecisiveness I can open my own business as an Australian relocation consultant.

Another small blessing is the holidays in Australia. Tomorrow is a public holiday in Victoria (ie Melbourne) as the footie finals take place over the weekend. For those of you who don't know footie is a game that was invented in Melbourne. It is extremely loved and popular but somehow this love has not been contagious. Here it rules all sports. So much so that the day before the match has been declared a state holiday. That's right is isn't even the day of the match it is the day before the match. So everyone will have an entire day to purchase their beers and open their bags of chips. One state over in the Australian capital territory they will all be working hard all day Friday. However, on Monday they will have a day off for labor day. Folks out here have decided that labor day should be at whatever time each state feels is best to evenly spread out their holidays over the year. Yup here in Australian we live by different rules. And so we sort of have a four day weekend as a family which we will dedicated to relocating.

Meanwhile, we are having a good time. Today the children got to chase a joey through the library. This is the kind of fun that happens when you live in Australia. I could expand on why there was a kangaroo hopping around the library but I think I will leave it to your imaginations.
