Splashing in the green

 Day 18: Drobollach to Baumgartnerhöhe

Kilometres walked: 9.5

Quote of the day: “Zadie, when I’m a farmer, you can pick my strawberries!” -Tova

Jesuses seen: 8

We woke up to a warm, sunny Monday. We were served breakfast that made us all really full, then headed down the hill to the amazing public beach. It’s on the iceberg-green Faaker See (Lake), set against a view of the jagged mountains of Slovenia. In addition to a long, sloppy grass hill leading down to a beach, there are numerous docks for jumping off or sunbathing, another dock for boat rentals, a small playground, a bar and a cafe, a huge waterslide going right down into the lake, an volleyball court, a skate park and a mountain bike track.

Our children probably would have been happy to live at this beach forever. But second best was spending two and a half hours going down the waterslide. They literally did not pause the entire time, which is impressive because you have to run up a hill to get to the start each time. I maxed out at about 15 runs which means that the girls probably went down more than 100 times between them.

We had to extract them from the fun to walk our kilometres. As it is a holiday today the paths were busy with bicyclists and walkers. We didn’t have a long way to walk and the walking was smooth. The first part went around the lake, then we walked through a couple of towns and then we climbed 600m to a grassy spot with a thriving group of mountains bikers and the most happening mountain hut we’ve been to yet. Tova and Zadie wasted away the rest of the day in the bathtub (our first one of the trip.) We also found a church where Tova singed her fingers and blew out someone’s candle in her efforts to pray that “we finish the Alpe Adria smoothly” to which Zadie added “…and quietly.”

We had a lovely last meal in Austria of Karntnernudeln, spatzle, asparagus soup and garlic soup and went to bed early so we’d be well rested for our longer day tomorrow. Austria has been a great place to walk and we’re all going to miss it.
