This morning, most unusually, everyone over the age of 6 was up and about at 6:15. In hushed tones, we prepared for Tova’s sixth birthday. Tamar made crepe batter. Aurora and I bought three kilos of passion fruit, rambutan and mandarins. Sophia made an elaborate card.
Tova woke up cheerful and stayed that way all day. She got hennaed in Hoi An; swam laps in exchange for learning about all the powerups in Super Mario; decorated birthday cookies. She resurrected Sophia in D&D, who tearfully died after valiantly trying to break the fall of Aurora, who had climbed a 50-ft palm tree to catch a scarlet bird. She watched Frozen for the nth time. Pizza dinner, as requested. Her birthday cake was cookies and her blown-out candles were relit for Chanukah.
She also got many tiny gifts (yay travel) like a Tamagochi Egg (beeps incessantly), a wristwatch, a plush cat and a mood ring. These were very popular but a bit ill-fated: first the watch stopped ticking within two hours, then later Tova somehow managed to drop her ring in the toilet at the worst possible time (promptly rescued by Tamar - who really is incredibly capable - using one chopstick, that’s how we roll in ‘nam)
Tova has grown and changed immensely in the past year - she’s getting more creative, more agile, possibly more mature, and more open to trying new things. Here’s to an awesome seventh year on the planet, and to exploring many of its corners with the one and only TLT.
