We have made it to the westernmost point of the United States of America - Hawaii. Just days before we arrived there were weeks of rain which culminated in an epic storm. A state of emergency was declared in northern Kauai with numerous road closures and sad tales of lost homes and businesses. This is the exact spot we were headed to first. Most people come to Hawaii for nice weather but In our case we left blue skies and sunshine for what was predicted to be more rain. Except weather forecasts are usually wrong and thankfully and it has been lovely here. Jakob was supposed to come on this intercontinental family reunification trip but unfortunately his back disabled him enough that he had to have a personal staycation instead.
Every time I come to Hawaii I am reminded that as cliche a holiday spot as it might be it is actually really great and incredibly beautiful and relaxed. I am happy for Aurora, one of our most laid back children, that she could enter her second decade Hawaii style. She got to be woken up by family members singing and bearing cake and gifts, she got to snorkel amongst multicoloured multitudes of fish, she got to swim for hours in a pool with a waterslide, she got to drink tropical beverages by the water, she got to eat sushi and she got to make her own cake and eat it too. She was pretty pleased about it all. And I am pretty pleased about her in general and the wonderful person she is growing into.
