Lucky number thirteen

Why is thirteen an unlucky number? Seems a perfectly decent one to me. All bubbly and prime. More than a dozen, less than a fortnight. A seductive 169 when squared. The age of maturation and adulthood in Judaism. Lace anniversary year...whatever that means. Enough birthday candles to see your friends' smiles. Way more cookies than anyone should eat in one sitting. Enough geese to make a vee. All good things. So as we plot our way past the thirteenth anniversary marker we can feel proud that we have come this far. We are all the good things that thirteen has to offer.

Much like a voice crackling boy reading his Torah portion our marriage has matured. As such we have celebrated like all adults do-by doing nothing special. Jakob worked until late. I corralled children until late. It was an unusually boring acknowledgment of a great thing. Next year we should probably make up for it by going skydiving or at least feeding each other fourteen petit fours or hiking fourteen kilometres backwards. At least Jakob managed to get us a house by offering to pay more than 13 dollars per week extra.

No mountains were climbed on this anniversary
